NEID Rossiter–McLaughlin Measurement of TOI-1268b: A Young Warm Saturn Aligned with Its Cool Host Star

Abstract Close-in gas giants present a surprising range of stellar obliquity, the angle between planet’s orbital axis and its host star’s spin axis. It is unclear whether obliquities reflect planets’ dynamical history (e.g., aligned for in situ formation or disk migration versus misaligned high-eccentricity tidal migration) other mechanisms primordial misalignment planet–star interactions) are more important sculpting obliquity distribution. Here we measurement TOI-1268 (TIC-142394656, V mag ? 10.9), young K-type dwarf hosting an 8.2 day period, Saturn-sized planet. TOI-1268’s lithium abundance rotation period suggest system age ages Pleiades cluster (?120 Myr) Prasepe (?670 Myr). Using newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, constrain via Rossiter–McLaughlin effect from both radial velocity Doppler tomography signals. The 3 ? upper bounds projected ? ? models below 60°. large star separation ( / R ? 17), combined with system’s age, makes it unlikely that planet has realigned star. probes architecture giant beyond reach realignment ? 10) reveals slightly system.
